Facebook’s Hidden Recommendations Are Awesome

By  Ben Stegner

Ever feel like there’s so much noise on Facebook that you can’t use it for what you really want? Sometimes you have to turn to little-known tricks to get productive on the social network.Unfriend, Unfollow, Unlike: The Zen of The Clutter-Free Timeline Unfriend, Unfollow, Unlike: The Zen of The Clutter-Free TimelineYour attention is the most valuable thing on the web. It might not feel like it when you're bored, mindlessly scrolling through your news feed, but it's true.READ MORE
One useful feature you might have seen your friends use is Facebook’s relatively new recommendations. You can use these to get advice and opinions from your trusted friends. Let’s check out how to use them and what you can use recommendations for.

What Are Recommendations?

Have you scrolled through your Facebook feed recently and noticed a post that looks like this?
facebook hidden recommendations
This is a recommendations post, which Facebook rolled out in fall 2016. They allow you to ask Facebook friends for their recommendations about businesses in the area.Hidden Feature in Facebook: Gather Recommendations From Friends Hidden Feature in Facebook: Gather Recommendations From FriendsWhen posting a Facebook update, there's one relatively hidden feature that many don't know about: gathering recommendations from friends.READ MORE
Of course, you could always ask for advice in your status before this, but now it tags these as a special type of post. Whenever you respond to one of these, Facebook automatically picks up words in your responses and tags the applicable business.
For example, let’s say your friend asks for a reliable mechanic in the Middleton area, and you respond Bob’s Auto Garage has always done great work for me! As long as Bob’s Auto Garage has a Facebook business page, Facebook will automatically generate a link to that company’s page on your comment. If it can’t automatically pull a relevant company from your comment, it will ask you to enter the business name.
facebook hidden recommendations
As more people respond, Facebook will add the locations to a map of the relevant area. This lets you easily review everywhere people have brought up so far.

How to Ask for Recommendations

It’s easy to ask for a recommendation on Facebook. When this feature was new, you had to include the word recommendation or similar for Facebook to realize that’s what you wanted. Now, however, you can ask Facebook friends for recommendations without any keywords.
Here’s how to create a post asking for recommendations:
  1. Click inside the Make Post box at the top of your News Feed to start writing a status update.
  2. In the list of options below (such as Photo/Video and Check in), scroll down and click Ask for Recommendations.
  3. Next, you’ll see a list of areas near your location pop up. You should pick one as specific as you need for the recommendations. For instance, if you’ve just moved and are asking for the best pizza place in your new neighborhood, you should specify your suburb here. Adding the nearest big city could result in recommendations that are too far away.
  4. Add some text to your post to ask your question. You should be as specific as possible to weed out irrelevant results. If you’re looking for a mechanic, include that you need body work done.
  5. When you’re satisfied with your post, click PostConsider changing the audience using the button next to Post if you’d like to ask friends of friends too.
ask facebook friends for recommendations
That’s all asking for recommendations takes! Note that you can’t add a photo or video to recommendation posts. You can check in, but it’s not necessary as adding a location in the above steps adds that for you. However, you can click the Feeling/Activity to add an explanation like Thinking about > my car if you like.
Hopefully, your friends will respond and add their recommendations to the map. If you don’t get many results, try posting in a Facebook group for your local community. You can then visit those business’ pages and contact them.5 Awesome Ways to Discover New Facebook Groups 5 Awesome Ways to Discover New Facebook GroupsThere is no directory of Facebook Groups to browse through, so the best you can do is rely on recommendations of Groups to join or learn a few tips and tricks to discover new Groups.READ MORE

What Categories Can I Get Recommendations About?

Facebook lets you request recommendations in many categories. They include:
  • Restaurants
  • Mechanics
  • Contractors
  • Doctors
  • Churches
  • Stores
  • Anything else you can think of
In fact, Facebook doesn’t actually require you to pick a category for your request. If you ask for a good plumber, there’s nothing stopping someone from replying with a jewelry store. The only important criteria is the question in your status and the area you specify. Your friends can respond with anything they like, even if Facebook’s widget doesn’t recognize it.

Facebook uses the location to make the recommendations relevant. Say you ask for a great steakhouse and someone replies Outback Steakhouse. There are hundreds of Outback locations, so Facebook will try to pick the best match for the area you chose. Respondents can always correct the mistake if Facebook picks the wrong one, though. Are You Sharing Your Location On Facebook Without Knowing? The Recommendations Page

Visit the recommendations page for everything related to this feature. Here you can scroll through recent requests from your friends, review your recommendation posts, or create a new one. When you’re feeling helpful, this is a great place to check to see what your friends need help with.

Get Ready to Recommend!

That’s really all there is to Facebook recommendations. They’re simply a way for Facebook to categorize requests and give people an easy way to respond with businesses they recommend. You can use them however you like and to ask Facebook friends about anything. Perhaps you want to ask for recommendations on what service to use after you cut cable — that’s not exactly Facebook’s intended use, but it still works!Cut That Cord! Hopefully, using the recommendations feature will help you find the best places around you and allow you to help your friends. You probably weigh advice from your friends more than strangers leaving reviews on the internet, so this saves you a lot of searching around.
What have you used Facebook’s recommendations for? Have you discovered any great businesses through it? Please share with us in the comments!

Folks, It’s Time to Delete the Facebook News Feed

By   Mihir Patkar

It’s time to get rid of your News Feed. Facebook is a sum of many parts, including Messenger, Events, Games, and a whole lot more. The News Feed is more a distraction than anything else. Here’s how (and why) you can delete it.

Why You Should Kill Your News Feed

When it first started, the News Feed was actually pretty nice. You got to know what your close friends or family was up to, since you don’t actually call each other every day. And you followed your favorite bands or news organizations to get updates.
Facebook News Feed GIFs - Find & Share on GIPHY
But over time, the News Feed has grown into an untamed beast, giving you more information than you know what to do with. At some point, you friended the neighbor of someone you went to nursery school with, and now you keep looking at his numerous check-ins.
As for news, we all know about the scourge of fake news now. Despite Facebook’s best efforts to fight it, it’s a growing problem with no real end in sight. How Can Social Networks Get Rid of Misinformation and Harassment? How Can Social Networks Get Rid of Misinformation and Harassment? We see fake news stories and serious harassment on Facebook and Twitter, but the social giants are trying to stop it. What have they done? And will it help make the internet a better place?READ MORE
And then there are Facebook’s “suggestions” littered throughout your feed. Back when you liked a page for your friend’s new pet store, you never thought Facebook would take that as an invitation to inundate you with cat videos.
facebook news feed sad
But most importantly, scientists keep saying the same thing in one study after another: Facebook makes you sad. You need to monitor how you consume content from the News Feed.Facebook Makes You Sad, and "It Won't Happen to Me" is a Lie Facebook Makes You Sad, and "It Won't Happen to Me" is a LieFacebook's potential as a trigger for depressive symptoms has been talked about in the past too, but this year has seen more of such studies than before. Here's what they say.READ MORE
All put together, do yourself a favor and delete your Facebook News Feed. You’ll be better off without it.

How to Delete the Facebook News Feed

There are a few basic elements of the Facebook News Feed, and all you need to do is get rid of them.
facebook news feed clean delete
  1. Unfollow all your friends, pages, and groups. (Unfollow is not the same as unfriending. You remain friends with everyone, you just don’t see any of their posts in the news feed.)
  2. Remove or hide all Suggested Posts, Suggested Pages, and “a video you may like” suggestions.
  3. Go nuclear and hide the News Feed.
On the desktop, there are extensions to get this done. Unfortunately, it’s much harder on smartphones. So here are the best ways you can currently kill your Facebook News Feed.

How to Unfollow All Friends, Pages, and Groups

Get the Google Chrome browser if you don’t already have it. The easiest way to unfollow all your friends in a single click is through the Chrome extension Nudge.
Once you download and install the extension, go to Facebook.com or refresh its tab. After a few seconds, you will see a banner at the bottom to Unfollow everything like this:
facebook news feed nudge unfollow banner
Click the banner, and the follow-up confirmation banner to unfollow all friends, groups, and pages. Nudge will start its work, and you’ll see the banner unfollowing one friend after another, like this:
facebook news feed nudge progress
Once Nudge is done, refresh Facebook to see it load without any posts from friends, groups, or pages. This isn’t a browser-only effect. This is your feed from now on your mobile app or any other way you access Facebook.
Download: Nudge for Chrome (Free)

How to Remove Suggested Posts and Videos

But despite unfollowing all your friends, it’s not a clean News Feed yet. You will still have to deal with Suggested Posts from Facebook, as well as a ton of “A video you may like” suggestions.
For that, you’ll need Social Fixer, the best Facebook extension for all browsers, and use it from now on. Sorry, there is no other way to clean up the news feed.15 Extensions to Transform Your Facebook Experience 15 Extensions to Transform Your Facebook ExperienceFrom finding out who unfriended you to keeping to removing those annoying boxes in the sidebar, here are the 15 best extensions for a better Facebook.READ MORE
Here’s what you need to do:

Download: Social Fixer (Free)
  1. Refresh all Facebook tabs, or restart the browser.
  2. On the Facebook page, click the Social Fixer wrench icon in the top-right corner, and go to Social Fixer Options.
  3. Go to Hide Posts and type “A video you may like” in the box, without the quotes.
  4. Go to Filters and in Filter Subscriptions, click the green plus sign next to Hide Sponsored/Suggested PostsHide “Shared Memories”, and Hide “People You May Know”.
  5. Refresh all Facebook tabs.
facebook news feed hidden posts
Finally, you’ll have a clean News Feed that doesn’t have any posts to distract you. But remember, this works only on computer browsers, not on mobile.

How to Hide the News Feed Entirely

If the Facebook News Feed is a distraction while you work, you have two other options on desktop browsers Chrome and Firefox. These are simple extensions to hide the news feed entirely, thus letting you use all of Facebook’s other features without the updates.
facebook news feed eradicator
News Feed Eradicator for Chrome hides the news feed and replaces it with an inspirational quote. Basically, it expects you to check back out of habit. The similar Firefox extension, Disable Facebook News Feed, does only what it says.
Keep in mind that again, this will keep your mobile News Feed alive and well. Facebook exerts strong control over its app. And current mobile browsers don’t have many extensions. Your best bet is to use a third-party Facebook app, but don’t expect much. The Best Third-Party Facebook Apps for Android Compared The Best Third-Party Facebook Apps for Android ComparedDon't like the official Facebook app? That's okay -- there are some solid alternatives.READ MORE

Are You Brave Enough to Purge?

I purged my entire news feed with Nudge’s easy mechanism and used Social Fixer to clean things up. After that, I carefully followed seven people whose feeds I am still interested in. And I have to say, Facebook is a lot less distracting than before.
What about you? Are you tired of a cluttered, never-ending scroll of updates? Will you purge your news feed and follow only those who you deem worthy?
